A SLOVAKIAN TRILOGY: Reflections of an ancestral journey

A search of our Slovakian roots took our family to the motherland. The following are photographs taken on this three-part journey beginning in Prague.

 Part I: PRAGUE

Awakening to the stillness of a city still asleep. I meander through dark and narrow cobbled streets. Out of the darkness golden spires pierce the sky with glowing light. Time seems frozen yet forever moving in circles on the square. The mind swings to and fro between past and present in rhythm to church bells. I cross a bridge that transcends time and sit in silent longing. Be at peace. Be at peace.

Part II: THE COUNTRYSIDE OF OUR FOREFATHERS

Remaining present to the past, the pilgrimage begins to honor the birth and resting places of our ancestors. United in a land both strange and strangely familiar, we seek to transcend barriers with a language of the heart. Contemplating our heritage and inheritance, we ask a universal question. What will be our legacy? Fear not. Fear not.

Part III: THE TATRAS

A time to rest and be restored in a place of recreation that recreates with dreams and visions. Mountain heights lift our spirits, broaden our perspectives and bring us closer to our higher selves. Mountain air is thin and pure, allowing us to see clearer and farther. Breathe in. Breathe in.

Epilogue: BUDAPEST

Budapest: a dichotomous city, formed by the ancient crescent river that divides it. Faintly illuminated in the afterglow of its opulent past, tempestuous Pest sits restlessly below the horizon of its stately sister on the hill. Buda, a shadow of her former self, stands regal in her decadence. An air of intrigue hangs over both like a film noire. While the river Danube forever beckons. Move on. Move on.
